Atwater Vineyards

Origin: Cross of two other Seibel hybrids, S.5163 and S.5593

New York Introduction: Uncertain, possibly released from the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva

Atwater Introduction: 1981

Acreage: Atwater Estate Vineyards: 0.9 acres/ Total New York: 38 acres

Taste and Aroma Characteristics: Wines are medium bodied with a berry-like fruit and earthy overtones. Variety is at its best when blended with another red hybrid.

How we use it: If grapes had a beauty contest, Chelois might win for show-stopping, jaw-dropping form, shape, and color. These “black pearls” are reserved for blending with our other red hybrid, Chancellor, to create the ultimate beginner’s red wine: Somerset Red.
