/ Pet-Nat Aromella - Gewurz
SKU: B-ATW-00323

A blend of 85% Aromella (our first time working aromatic white grape) and 15% skin-contact Gewürztraminer, our 2023 Pétillant Naturel is a naturally sparkling, lower alcohol blend featuring delicate, fizzy bubbles. This refreshing wine is reminiscent of a sparkling ginger peach tea with a squeeze of citrus. With fermentation completed in the bottle under its crown cap, each bottle is unique. Pair with french fries or soft cheeses.

Although Pét-nat wines are made with an ancient technique originating in the 1500s in France, the style went out of fashion until recently.

Our winemakers love this technique and have been producing Pét-nats since 2016. The wine is bottled before fermentation ends so that the fermentation finishes in the bottle. As a result, the wine is naturally sparkling. The haziness or sediment you may see in the bottom of the bottle are the lees that also come from this process and are completely safe to drink.

Head winemaker Wes has some tips about the best way to open these sparkling crown-capped wines--click here for a video! Before opening, be sure to chill the bottle upright to 40 to 50°. Allowing it to remain in the refrigerator overnight will do the trick.

Vineyard Notes
The 2023 vintage started off with a hard freeze in May, resulting in widespread shoot damage across the Finger Lakes. Fortunately, most of the region was able to bounce back later in the summer. Disease pressure was alleviated by a dry September, making for a smooth first half of harvest. October had some rain during the first few weeks but finished with cool and sunny days. From a wine chemistry perspective, the 2023 vintage is more typical of a "classic" Finger Lakes vintage-- with both red and white wines showing well. The tannin and color in the red wines are somewhere in the middle of the road-- not as intense as 2022, but much more substantial than 2021. The white wines have slightly elevated acidity and will age quite well.
