Reserve Riesling 2005 Takes Top Prize for Best North American Riesling
October 13, 2006
7th Annual Hyatt International Riesling Challenge Trophy for Best North American Riesling was awarded to our 2005 Reserve Riesling . Held in Canberra, Australia, the "Riesling Challenge" has become one of the most important wine competitions is Australia. We are overcome with pride for this prestigious award and are truly rewarded that the Finger Lakes has again received this award, solidfying that this region's terrior makes world-class Rieslings. Sheldrake Point Vineyards of Cayuga Lake, won last year for their 2004 Riesling Ice Wine.
“The Challenge is now a truly international competition with over 100 wines from Europe and a growing number from North America,” said Chairman of Judges, Louisa Rose from Yalumba. “The gold and trophy winning wines are truly world class. Their makers should be very proud of their achievement.”
We salute the innovators of the challenge, Ken Helm, Wolf Blass, and the members of the Hyatt International Riesling Challenge Committee as they continue to develop the concept to promote Riesling, nationally and internationally, to improve its quality and encourage innovation and research for better styles.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Writer David Schildknecht, writer of mostly German wines for acclaimed Robert Parker's Wine Advocate visited our region in March 2006. He met with winemaker Vinny Aliperti and tasting room manager Katie Marks at 5:00 pm on a blustery winter evening and tasted, talked, and recorded his thoughts on his mini-recorder during his tight schedule that included visiting almost fifteen other wineries in the region.
Of those wineries visited, he sought in his report to"single out wines of special distinction, thus focusing on those most deserving of respect and attention worldwide." Here is what we wrote about Atwater:
"Katie and Ted Marks, along with winemaker Vincent Aliperti, farm a relatively warm stretch of eastern Seneca Lake shoreline and the "sold out" status of most of their wines testifies to the reputation they have been building within the state. Their 2005 Vidal Blanc - a wine to which, like most of thier 2005s, they added acid in response to an unusually warm vintage and which finished with a bit of residual sugar - offers satisfying aromas and flavors of ripe melon, lime, honey, and sweet herbs. The palate is silkly and refined and the finish exuberantly juicy and immensely satisfying. Abandon your prejudices about hybrids all ye who uncork a bottle of this extraordinary value! Unfortunately, the corresponding Riesling was on its finings when I visited and impossible to judge. Several young reds here - notably a 2004 Pinot Noir - showed promise, although the latter was palpably stressed from recent filtration when I tasted it."
2005 - Vidal Blanc 88 points

Wine Spectator: "New York Rising "
Finally! The Finger Lakes receives much deserved accolades in the "bible" of all wine publications, Wine Spectator. The article beautifully focuses on the three main wine regions of New York, Finger Lakes, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley and features smaller boutique wineries, innovative restaurants and accomodations within each region. Writer Mitch Frank graced us with several mentions throughout the twenty-page article and acknowledged the Finger Lakes as producing the "best Riesling on this side of the Atlantic"!
A few blurbs from the article:
"For a look at the future of the Finger Lakes, check out some of the newer wineries, particularly around Seneca's southeastern shore. Vintners at places like Standing Stone, Atwater Estate Vineyards and Red Newt Wine Cellars are revealing the potential of the region's wines. The tasting rooms at all these wineries are friendly and inviting."
"Having released its first vintage in 1999, Atwater is among the area's younger wineries but is located in a prime spot at the southern end of Lake Seneca's "banana belt". The vines are planted on particularly steep slopes above the water. Winemaker Vincent Aliperti makes 6,000 cases a year, including very refreshing Riesling and Gewurztraminer.
Wine Scores from the article:
88 - Atwater Estate Riesling Finger Lakes 2004 $16
Classic citrus, peach, mineral and herb flavors mingle in this expressive white. A touch of sweetness gives it softness, but vibrant acidity keeps it lively.
86 - Atwater Estate Riesling Finger Lakes Dry 2004 $16
Vibrant acidity gives this white verve, while fresh pineapple, mineral and lime flavors keep it balanced. It's expressive and harmonious.
82 - Atwater Estate Dry Rose Finger Lakes Dry 2004 $16
It was very exciting to have Wine Spectator visit and write such positive things about New York wines. If you have the opportunity take a look at the articles, we'd like to mention that the Finger Lakes section opens with a full two page photograph of a beautiful early evening look over our vineyards and Seneca Lake taken by our own Amanda Gumtow.
Please note that the above wines mentioned are unfortunately sold out. Please come and try our new vintages.

Ripe and juicy, with lots of pear, slate, fig and honeysuckle notes that stay fresh through the rich finish. Nice hint of anise at the very end. Drink now through 2006.
